Beyond the bandaid
Community work is highly complex and unpredictable and social challenges cannot be boiled down to a simple chain of cause and effect. Nonprofits working to support affected people need to identify and tackle the root causes of these issues, as as opposed to a band-aid approach, which results in temporary solutions.
Transformational change is about dismantling systems that entrench things like inequality and exploitation and rebuilding equitable communities from the ground up. When philanthropic capital is deployed in a strategic manner, it has the potential to create this type of transformational social change.
In this online session, Dina Sherif, executive director at the Legatum Centre for Entrepreneurs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will unpack how strategic philanthropic investments can catalyse positive, impactful change, tackle complex social issues, and fund sustainable solutions that address root causes to enable systems change in action.
Nick Grono, the CEO of The Freedom Fund, the world’s first private donor fund dedicated to tackling slavery around the world, meanwhile, will share his experience of non-profit leadership from his decades long career in the sector.
Grono, will also discuss his upcoming book "How to Lead Non-profits: Turning Purpose into Impact to Change the World", a practical guide to harnessing the power of purpose to shape organisations.
Both speakers will share insights and examples of how giving can be a powerful force for shaping equitable and resilient systems across various sectors and also discuss the importance of scalability and collaboration to deliver of meaningful and lasting impact.
